Knowing Him

You may know volumes of Scriptures and be able to quote entire passages, but do you know Him?  Have you experienced the light of His face or found yourself melting in the warmth of His arms?  Have you known His heart of hearts or the depth of His affection?  He is loving and kind, a compassionate Father and a faithful Friend.  He is the wisest Counselor, the Defender you’ve been dying to depend on.  He is also an all-consuming fire and His wrath; you dare not challenge.  His way is love and His name is terror.

When the truth is nothing but a thought or acquired knowledge to the curious mind but not lived experience or a person you have met, it is hard to comprehend someone else’s encounter or admire their integrity.  We are in a dangerous position, a space where many stand to perish.  Our souls are in a voyage on treacherous seas, rocked by waves of negativity and tormented by storms of doubt.  Our faith is on most fragile ground and we must find the rock to stand on or slip down the path of presumptuous sin.  We must hold on to grace and let go of pride or we risk losing it all though we are desperately trying to win.

Many of our intelligent choices and the expression of our knowledge only serve to trample His sacrifice.  We have learned to cast aside the sacred truth and devalue the dear price He paid in favor for our exaltation.  We bowed down for the glories of this world while diming the light of the word we found foolish.  Eloquent as we may be, we can never silence the One who created our mouth, so we blaspheme His word and cast a shadow over His reputation.
The writer of Hebrews warns us of the dread we will face when God comes to recompense us for our deeds.  He reminds us on the throne of grace sits the One who can destroy both body and soul.  So, let us remain in the confines of His boundaries and learn not for knowledge’s sake but to understand His ways.  Let us fear now and ascribe reverence to whom it is due, for we will have no defense before the One who knows it all.

When we feel our spirits sway, like those of ancient days, let us be reminded no sacrifice can take the place of obedience.  What God requires and what pleases Him is a surrendered heart, a spirit willing to follow His lead.  Lord, grant us hearts that fear Your might and embrace Your grace.  Help us understand the consequences of each of our deeds, the weight of our thoughts, the power of our speech.  Reconcile our hearts back to You and help us see You with eyes of the spirit.

Let it be so!
